The roots of luceHabitat go back to the 70’s…

It was around the end of the 70’s that Costas Mathios  and his Associates created  Habitat, a picturesque lighting boutique 35 m2  in Kolonaki area in Athens.

Kolonaki area was and still is, very famous for its classic yet innovative spirit.

A lot of pioneering shops and enterprises are launching the last trends of International  trade, mainly garments, jewelry  and household appliances.

Luminaires was, by that time, a challenge….  

But it was dared….

It was then that the Greek market started to get in touch with good design and refined taste in lighting fixtures… Nonetheless, it was not at all easy….

A market dominated, so far, by the pending multi-lamp in the middle of the ceiling, and the abat-jour, had a serious difficulty to understand and accept the new shapes and forms. 

People were impressed at first sight, but then cautious and afraid to proceed with the new…

A lot of consumer education had to be done to overcome this hang off.

Fortunately enough, the help of the first circulations of decoration magazines was precious.

Those valuable publications helped people familiarize themselves with contemporary design and technology as well.

A lot of Costas Mathios’ articles on lighting have been hosted in their pages.

Quality, functionality, safety, even color are now new concepts that slowly take a special meaning  in people’s choices….

Houses, offices and gardens become more functional, more beautiful…

The new trend in Lighting is finally established and appreciated…..

Speaking about Lighting (not just luminaires), this big shift happens around the end of the 80’s…

It was then that Costas Mathios takes the leading part in changing the approach from Luminaires to Lighting.

The hidden part of the iceberg ,(the biggest and most important) is revealed.

His training in the manufacturers laboratories and research centers along with the publications of IES(Illumination Engineering Society) of USA and those of CIE (Commission International d’Eclairage) of EU in various issues in the Lighting field, help him to share this learning with people.

Lighting stops being the privileged knowledge of a small cycle of experts and goes down to its rightful consumers—everyday people. The concepts of lighting consultancy, of lighting calculation and the need for a photometric study in any space to be lighted artificially, become slowly but steadily an integral part not only in the vocabulary but in the attitudes of people.

Luminaires are now faced not as necessary objects to help us see after dark, but simultaneously as functional instruments and decorative factors in any space.

The focus is now on Light.

This change helps people realize the need for proper illumination.

The search changes direction, first towards determining the illumination needed and following, towards choosing the suitable luminaires that meet this illumination.

And this attitude is valid up to date… It is the approach we recommend…

Around the beginning of the 90’s the center of Athens becomes very crowded, the traffic is tremendous and roads look like an enormous…parking. A curfew in cars circulation is imposed (every other day by odd and even plate numbers) impeding everyday access to the center and Kolonaki is being slowly demystified…

The small boutique is no longer worthwhile keeping….

In 1994 Costas Mathios inaugurates Luc'arte  a brand new show-room, 300 m2 with an 100 m2 natural garden, in Caravel hotel area, neighboring to Kolonaki but just outside the curfew ring for easy daily access.

The variety of solutions offered is now enormous. More than 30 world leading manufacturers  materialize the inspirations of the “top cream” of International design. 

A special Lighting Consultancy Center is organized to make the choice informed.

The dawn of the new millennium finds   Luc'arte  on the top of enterprises offering  “quality of life”… 

In 2010 the new generation takes over. Panos Mathios continues the exciting tradition of his father….

The pioneering Habitat and its development  Luc'arte  merge their knowledge and experience to the new evolution luceHabitat.
