Blowing crystal to give it a shape in a furnace, is a very ...hot art that entails thirst...The maestri of Murano need always to have a beaker stand by to drink out of. So, what is more natural and easier than to make one themselves, with whatever scrap glass available in front of them.. The fragments and leftovers of their work, lying around by the mouth of the furnace.....
In that way, the cups of the furnace (GOTI di Fornasa in the Venice dialect),were first created a long time ago, some...centuries ago. And kept on denoting up to date, the magic that occurs when inspiration informs skill....
But beyond the functional usefulness of the drinking vessel, this spontaneously improvised scrap glass reprocessing, was a first class opportunity to experiment. To invent, create and aply new technics and new combinations in forms and colors.

BAROVIER & TOSO, the oldest company in Murano, with an history going back for more than 600 years(!), has revived this ancient practice with two main categories of GOTI:
GOTI DI FORNASA
To date the GOTI di Fornasa, reflect this old tradition of Murano glassmaking, in the furnaces of BAROVIER & TOSO. Either utensil as candelebrum(with a resseau wax vessel put in ), or decorative as a vase, they are all unique collectors' items, depicting the personality and dexterity of their creator. And furthermore they signal the strict hierarchy governing the furnace, as according to their glassblower-maker they are distiguished to : The goti di maestro (the cups of the master) the goti di servente (the cups of the assistant) and the goti di garzonetto (the cups of the furnace cadet boy).

GOTI LUMINOSI
One day,a bulb slept into a goto di fornasa, and the image was astonishingly different. That's how the goti luminosi (luminous cups) were borned.
Out of this classic item of the Murano crafts culture, BAROVIER & TOSO has created the goti luminosi collection of lighting fixtures.The same philoshophy, technique, experience, skill,and a creative eye come into play, but now to reveal the privileged relationship that Murano glass enjoys with light
